Musings on Little Guy

I've often extolled the wisdom of daily newspaper comic strips, specifically the still-missed genius of Calvin and Hobbes.

In one series, young Calvin found a severely-injured raccoon. With his family's help, he tried to nurse it back to life, but the raccoon eventually died. Shortly thereafter, Calvin was discussing the meaning of the animal's death to Hobbes, saying, "Either it's mean or it's arbitrary, and either way I've got the heebie-jeebies."  Read More...

Today's exercise should be an interesting one. I've got about a dozen ideas rattling around in my brain, all of them loosely connected in various ways to create another idea, a gestalt, some sort of grand unified theory of life. Why so blue, panda bear?

I woke early this morning, around 7:30 to be precise, which is unusual for me in several ways. First, it's Saturday, my one day off during the week. Second, it's Saturday and the weekend I don't have my kids, which generally means I was out quite late the previous night. Not so this week. The cold/flu/plague/ebola virus that struck me a week ago has been sticking around like an unwanted houseguest, and by the time I got off work last night all I wanted to do was get into bed. Decoration Day

"A lot of the past two years have been a blur to me."

Those words are from my 75-year-old mother, spoken as we are driving down back roads on this overcast Saturday, from Birmingham on through Lincoln, then Ohatchee and Alexandria, until we finally reach our destination in Jacksonville. She and I, along with my two daughters, are on the way to the family plot at the cemetery adjacent to Jacksonville State University, where we will place new flowers on my father's, brother's, and maternal grandparents' graves.  Read More...
